Abstract
The objective of this project was to develop and study the treatment model for opium addicts in the highlands. The model was developed based on Stringer's concept, which comprised of three steps: looking, thinking, and acting. This project was carried out during 2016-2019 in 6 districts of 2 provinces: Chiang Dao District, Chai Prakan, Mae Taeng, Omkoi, Wiang Haeng in Chiang Mai Province, and Mae Ramat District in Tak Province.
The target groups consisted of 3 groups:
21 nurses and public healthcare staff
49 network personnel
565 opium addicts selected using purposive sampling technique
The research instruments included pre-post-test of knowledge, quality of life questionnaire with reliability of 0.83, and performance record form. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.
The results revealed that:
The developed nursing care model for opium addicts in highland comprised of:
A guideline for participation of network partners
A nursing care for opium addicts
The investigation of using the developed nursing care model found that:
Knowledge on reducing harm from drug use and the establishment of a reducing harm from drug use center of the nurses, public healthcare staff, and network personnel after training were significantly higher than before training at the level of .05.
The establishment of a reducing harm from drug use center (drop-in centers) had increased from 14 to 27 centers.
A total of 2,984 opium addicts received treatment, 80.03% remained in the treatment system, 12.30% stopped using opiates and methadone, and their overall quality of life was at a high level.
