Abstract
This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to explore factors related to 3 aspects of professional quality of work life for the professional nurses: satisfaction of helping others, burnout, and secondary stress from experiences of suffering while helping others. The sample consisted of 242 professional nurses selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using an online questionnaire, consisted of (1) a personal information questionnaire; (2) a working conditions questionnaire; (3) a workload assessment form; (4) a nursing practice environment questionnaire; and (5) a professional quality of work life questionnaire. The content validity index ranged from 0.69-0.96, and the reliability index ranged from 0.73-0.91. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation coefficients.
The results showed that professional quality of work life, particularly satisfaction in helping others, burnout, and secondary stress, was at a moderate level (49.99%, 50.01%, and 50.00%, respectively). Marital status, income, and length of service were positively correlated with satisfaction in helping others (x2 215, r .190, and r .189, p < .05, respectively). Age, income, and length of service were negatively correlated with burnout (r -.194, r -.208, and r -.241, p < .05, respectively). Participation in hospital operations, nursing management, leadership managerial competence and support, adequacy of staffing and resources, and coworker relationships were positively correlated with satisfaction in helping others (r .386, r .388, r .273, r .349, r .378, p < .05, respectively) and were negatively correlated with burnout (r -.217, r -.241, r .329, r -.221, r -.205, p < .05, respectively). Working hours and workload were positively correlated with burnout and secondary stress (r .271, r .290, r .267, r .137, p < .05, respectively).
