The development of a health promotion model for women cancer survivors at the National Cancer Institute

This research and development study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a health promotion model for women cancer survivors at the National Cancer Institute. The study was conducted in three phases: (1) assessment of health problems and health promotion approaches for women cancer survivors after treatment completion; (2) development of the health promotion model; and (3) evaluation of the model's effectiveness. The participants comprised two groups: 100 women cancer survivors with breast or colorectal cancer, including an experimental group receiving the holistic health promotion model and a control group receiving usual nursing care (50 participants per group), and 42 registered nurses providing cancer care. Research instruments included a health promotion manual, symptom assessment form, health-promoting behavior questionnaire, quality-of-life questionnaire, knowledge test, and interview guides. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The findings showed that the developed model consisted of six components: (1) management of physical impacts, (2) management of psychosocial impacts, (3) management of comorbidities, (4) surveillance for cancer recurrence and new primary cancers, (5) health promotion and disease prevention, and (6) personnel preparation. Following the intervention, the experimental group demonstrated significantly fewer distressing symptoms and significantly higher health-promoting behaviors and quality of life than both before the intervention and the control group (p < 0.001). In addition, registered nurses achieved significantly higher knowledge scores after the training program than before training (p < 0.001).
The developed health promotion model enhanced holistic care for women cancer survivors by improving health-promoting behaviors, quality of life, and nurses' competency in survivorship care. The model can be applied to improve nursing services for women cancer survivors.
