Integrating Evidence into Practice: Linking Research, Evidence-Based Practice, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Clinical Practice Guideline

Abstract
Improving the quality of nursing care requires the integration of research, evidence-based practice, continuous quality improvement, and clinical practice guidelines. However, in practice, the roles and interrelationships among these concepts remain unclear, which can limit the effectiveness of their implementation. This academic article aims to synthesize the distinctions and connections among these concepts and to propose an integrative framework for application in the nursing profession.
The synthesis indicates that research generates new knowledge; evidence-based practice focuses on selecting and applying the best available evidence in conjunction with clinical expertise and patient context; continuous quality improvement emphasizes the ongoing enhancement of care processes in real-world settings; and clinical practice guidelines serve as a key mechanism for systematically synthesizing and translating evidence into practice. The article proposes an integrative framework that links these components within a learning health system characterized by continuous feedback for improvement. To illustrate its practical application, a case study on warfarin management is presented, demonstrating the integration process from evidence appraisal and clinical decision-making to guideline development and outcome evaluation.
In conclusion, the proposed integrative framework clarifies the roles and interconnections among the key concepts, supporting nurses in effectively translating knowledge into practice and contributing to sustained improvements in the quality and safety of patient care.
