The Effect of a Rapid Response System on Clinical Outcomes among Patients with Sepsis at Pathum Thani Hospital

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency associated with high mortality. Rapid identification and appropriate management within the first hour are essential to reduce disease severity and mortality. This quasi-experimental with one-group pretest-posttest design study aimed to evaluate the effects of a rapid response system for the management of patients with sepsis on clinical outcomes at Pathum Thani Hospital. The purposive sample consisted of 78 patients diagnosed with sepsis and admitted at Pathum Thani Hospital, in June 2023 and 103 patients in July 2023.  The research instrument was a rapid response system for sepsis care, comprising (1) administrative system, (2) operational system, and (3) academic system. Data were collected using clinical outcomes record form. The content validity index ranged from 0.67 to 1.00. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test.


The results showed that after the implementation of the rapid response system, the proportion of patients receiving timely screening and diagnosis, receiving intravenous fluids at a rate of 30 ml/kg in the first hour, receiving care in the intensive care unit, and screening for deterioration using the SOS Score showed an increasing trend. Meanwhile, the mortality rate among patients with severe sepsis decreased. A comparison on the proportion of patients received antibiotics within 1 hour of diagnosis between the pre and post implementation groups revealed a statistically significant difference (χ² 3.287, p < .05).
