A Comprehensive Needs Assessment of Nursing Students’ Readiness for Clinical Practice to Inform Innovative Teaching and Learning Design at Pathumthani University

This survey research aimed to (1) identify and prioritize needs, (2) analyze underlying causes of needs, and (3) propose solutions to enhance the clinical practice readiness of the nursing students. This study consisted of 3 phases: (1) identifying and prioritizing, a sample of 95 fourth-year nursing students were recruited, data were collected using the Clinical Practice Readiness Questionnaire and the Social Support for Nursing Practice Questionnaire, yielding Cronbach’s alpha of 0.98 and 0.97, respectively, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and PNImodified; (2) analyzing the underlying causes, the informant of 8 fourth-year nursing students were recruited with semi-structured interviews, data were analyzed using fault tree analysis; (3) proposing solutions, the informant of 6 nursing administrators and faculty members with semi-structured interviews, data were analyzed using the Multi-Attribute Utility Technique.
The findings revealed that (1) the overall priority need for clinical practice readiness of the nursing students was at a low level (PNImodified =.073). Support from the university and faculty was identified as the most urgent priority need (PNImodified=.200), followed by nursing practice (PNImodified=.185) and support from instructors (PNImodified=.156). (2) The causes of these prioritized needs included the nursing students lacked of sufficient knowledge and confidence in performing nursing procedures, as well as inadequate support systems for clinical training. (3) Strategies to enhance the clinical practice readiness of the nursing students consisted of the development of an anytime–anywhere knowledge review system, pre-clinical preparation activities, and instructional approaches based on gamification, categorized according to nursing specialties. These findings provide empirical evidence for developing or designing appropriate teaching innovations that are consistent with the context and needs of nursing students.
