Abstract 


Background: This descriptive study aimed to examine the incidence of anxiety and depression among patients admitted on their first day of hospitalization to the general medical wards under the Department of Medical and Psychiatric Nursing, Siriraj Hospital.


Method: The study sample consisted of 106 patients admitted between May 2022 and August 2023. Data were collected using a personal information questionnaire and the Thai version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Thai HADS). A score equal to or greater than 8 on each subscale was considered indicative of anxiety or depression. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, employing frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and chi-square tests to determine associations between variables.


Results: On the first day of hospitalization, 24.5% of the patients (95% CI: 17–34%) experienced anxiety, and 30.2% (95% CI: 22–40%) experienced depression. Lighting conditions in the wards were found to be significantly associated with the incidence of anxiety, while infectious diseases—identified as the cause of hospitalization—were significantly associated with depression.


Conclusion: Lighting in the hospital ward has a direct impact on patients’ sleep quality and is associated with anxiety. Therefore, it is recommended that nighttime lighting in hospital wards be adjusted to promote adequate rest. Additionally, patients hospitalized with
