Abstract

Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop and evaluate a nursing service model to enhance patient safety in individuals undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The study was guided by the Deming Cycle (Plan–Do–Check–Act: PDCA), and consisted of four phases: situation analysis, model development and pilot testing, full implementation, and evaluation. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 100 multidisciplinary healthcare personnel and 20 CABG patients. The research instruments included general information questionnaires for both staff and patients, the developed nursing service model, an observational checklist, a professional nurse opinion survey, and a patient satisfaction questionnaire. The content validity index (CVI) was 0.86, the inter-rater reliability for the observation checklist was 0.84, and the reliability coefficients for the instruments were 0.78, 0.82, and 0.80, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean) and the independent paired t-test.

The results showed that the developed nursing service model was structured into three phases: preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. Healthcare personnel demonstrated high adherence to the model (91.43% and 99.09%, respectively), with no reported cases of surgical site infections or retained surgical items. Patient satisfaction scores were high (Means = 46.30 and 54.50), and healthcare personnel satisfaction significantly increased from a moderate level (Mean = 21.16) to a high level (Mean = 31.96) (p < .001). In conclusion, the developed nursing service model effectively enhanced patient safety, reduced postoperative complications, and improved satisfaction among both patients and healthcare personnel.
