Abstract

Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop the elderly patient nursing care system at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital based on the systems theory framework. The study was divided into three phases: (1) analyzing the current situation of the elderly patients care; (2) developing the elderly patient nursing care system; and (3) evaluating the results of using the developed nursing care system. The sample consisted of 390 elderly patients and 339 professional nurses from relevant inpatient units. The research instrument consisted of the developed nursing care system and the test on knowledge, practice, attitudes, and satisfaction of the patients and the nurses. The content validity of the instruments was checked by 3 experts, yielding a CVI of .88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, content analysis, and paired t-tests.

The findings revealed that the developed elderly patient nursing care system at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital consisted of 5 components: (1) policies; (2) the committee; (3) the practice guidelines; (4) professional nurse competency development; and (5) knowledge related to consultation, documentation, reporting, and supervision. The outcomes of using the developed nursing care system found that the knowledge and practice competencies of the nurses improved significantly (p < .001). The percentage of falls, pressure ulcers, and pneumonia infections decreased significantly (p < .001). The patients and the professional nurses had a high level of satisfaction, exceeding 90 percent. In conclusion, this research study showed that developing an appropriate nursing care system was quite important to prevent complications and enhance the elderly’s quality of life.
