Abstract

This one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the mean scores of comprehensive geriatric health assessment competencies before and after the preparation on the geriatric nursing practice using simulation-based learning and satisfaction of the nursing students with the preparation. The purposive sample of 36 fourth-year nursing students were recruited. The research instrument was the pre- geriatric nursing practice preparation model using simulation-based learning. Data collection tools consisted of the competency assessment form on comprehensive geriatric health assessment and the satisfaction assessment form, yielding content validity of 1.0 and .97, respectively. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .86 and .72, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.

The results showed that the mean score on the comprehensive geriatric health assessment of the nursing students after the pre- geriatric nursing practice preparation using simulation-based learning was significantly higher than before the preparation (t 23.59, p < .05). The nursing students reported the highest satisfaction on the confidence in geriatric assessment (M 4.80, SD .40). Therefore, the instructors should use a simulation-based learning model to prepare the students for practice using their knowledge and competencies on assessing the health status of the elderly in the community according to academic and professional standards.
