Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop and study the effects of implementing a safety monitoring system model for the surgical patients. The study consisted of 3 phases. The simple random sampling was employed and consisted of 67 professional nurses and 90 surgical recipients. The research instrument was a safety monitoring system model for the surgical patients. Data collecting tools comprised of feasibility and ease of use evaluation form, knowledge measurement form, performance assessment form, satisfaction questionnaire, safety data recording form for patient care after surgery, and surgical patient safety data recording form. The tools were checked for validity, yielding a value of .88 - .99. Data were analyzed usinh descriptive and inferential statistics.

The results revealed that the safety monitoring system model for the surgical patients consisted of 8 components: governance, audit management, policy formulation, developing participation, learning support, task assignment, safety culture, and teamwork. After implemented the model, the nurses had average knowledge scores and nursing activity performance scores were statistically significantl higher than befor the model implenetation (t = 13.103 and t = 9.155, p < 0.05, respectively). The average satisfaction score was at the highest level (Mean 4.61, SD 0.71). The nurses complied with the system across all the service units. After using the model, the incidence of adverse events among the surgical patients had decreased from 11.11 percent to 2.22 percent, and the incidence of postponed surgery due to preventable causes had reduced from 3.33 percent to 2.22 percent.
