Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of the nursing therapeutics program during maternal transition period towards knowledge and caring behaviors for preterm infants with very low birth weight, who admitted at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. A sample of 22 mothers was purposively selected according to specified criteria. The sample was divided into 2 groups and each group consisted of 11 mothers. The control group received standard care; while the experimental group obtained the nursing therapeutics program during maternal transition period. The research instruments consisted of (1) the mother’s personal information form, (2) knowledge assessment form on caring for premature and very low birth weight infants, yielding CVI of 0.90 and KR-20 of 0.90, (3) caring behavioral assessment form for premature and very low birth weight infants, yielding CVI of 0.95 and Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.92. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, standard deviation, and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The results revealed that the experimental group had significantly higher average score on knowledge and caring behaviors than the control group (p < .001). Therefore, the nursing therapeutics program during maternal transition period can be used for mothers of premature and very low birth weight infants. This intervention enables mothers to take care of their babies properly and appropriately.
