Abstract
This quasi - experimental research aimed to examine effects of an education program via mobile application on self-care behaviors to prevent infection among children with cancer receiving chemotherapy. Orem’s self- care theory provided the theoretical framework of this study. The participants were 24 children aged 7-12 years who were diagnosed with cancer and were receiving chemotherapy at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Thailand. The participants were assigned to the control group (n=12) and the experimental groups (n=12). The control group received usual care whereas the experimental group received usual care and an education program via Mobile Application promoting self-care behaviors for preventing infection. The program lasts 3 weeks. Self-care behaviors were measured at pretest, after the program completion, and at 1st week, 2nd week, and 3th week. after the program completion. The instruments used for collecting data included a demographic data form and the self-care behavior evaluation form (SCEF). The reliability of the SCEF was tested and yielded 0.92. The data were analyzed by using repeated measures ANOVA.
The results revealed that, after the intervention completion and at 1 week, 2 week, and 3 week the mean scores of self-care behavior for infection prevention of the experimental group was higher than the control group F(3, 66) = 10.24, p < .05). This study revealed that the education program via Mobile Application showed promise in enhancing self-care behaviors for preventing infection among children with cancer receiving chemotherapy.
