Abstract 


This research and development study aimed at improving and examining the outcomes of the development of the critically ill patients nursing care in the inter-facility referral system. The sample consisted of 67 registered nurses and 78 critical emergency patients, in the inter-facility referral system, both pre and post development groups. The study comprised of 4 phrases: (1) situation analysis, (2) development of the critically ill patients nursing care in the referral system, (3) implementation of the critically ill patients nursing care in the referral system, (4) evaluate the results. The research instruments consisted of (1) assessment of knowledge and skill on the critically ill patients nursing care in the referral system, (2) a questionnaire on the nurses’ opinion towards the practice guidelines, (3) a questionnaire on the nurses’ opinion towards the development. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.  Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation, and t test.


The results revealed that (1) there were 3 aspects of the critically ill patients nursing care in the inter-facility referral system: 1.1 the process denoted the clinical practice guidelines for the nurses on caring the critically ill patients in the inter-facility referral system, 1.2 the personnel denoted a workshop on the critically ill patients nursing care in the inter-facility referral system, 1.3 the patient denoted nursing outcomes assessment and the nursing records.  (2) The results of the development found that professional nurses' opinions towards the development were at the highest level (Mean 4.66, SD .26).  Knowledge and skill of the nurses after training were significantly higher than before the training (p<.01). The appropriateness of the nursing care during transferring after the development was higher than before the development; while the average rate of vital sign variation during transferring after the development was significantly improved than before the development (p<.01).
