Creating value for the retention of Gen X and Gen Y nurses

Abstract
Registered nurses are the health human capital of the health service system. A valuable professional human resource who can practice nursing must have accumulated expertise, skills, and knowledge in nursing from their training and experience nursing patients. During the past 20 years, the number of patients has increased. The health service system is growing rapidly. As a result, the number of professional nurses is insufficient to care for the patients. Although the Ministry of Public Health has accelerated the production of nursing personnel, it cannot be all civil servants. In addition, the workload increased, causing a resignation. This is a loss of both expertise and the cost of human resource development. Therefore, the creation of value for the retention of nursing personnel in the health service system until retirement helps people to receive quality and standard care and increases the effectiveness of health services. Generation X and Generation Y nurses make up the majority of the staff currently working and have different demands. This academic paper, therefore, synthesizes the literature and presents issues related to the persistence of Generation X and Generation Y nursing personnel on the issues of (1) the concept of persistence in the organization; (2) factors affecting the persistence of the nurses in the organization; and (3) guidelines for creating value for nursing personnel for retention in the organization, which can be useful for application in human capital management in nursing organizations in the aspect of maintaining personnel in the organization or the public health service system.
