Abstract

The objective of this research and development study was to create an online preoperative procedure model to improve knowledge and capability of professional nurses on patients’ preparation for abdominal surgery to attain safety from complications. The proposed online model derived theoretical concepts of creating self-knowledge (constructivism) and group discussion process. The sample consisted of registered nurses working at the surgery units, Prachuapkhirikhan Hospital. There were 4 steps: (1) fundamental data analysis, (2) develop a model, (3) model implementation, and (4) model evaluation and endorsement. The study tools consisted of the proposed online preoperative procedure model, knowledge and capability test of professional nurses, and the nurses’ satisfaction questionnaire.  Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test and paired t-test.

The results revealed that (1) the online preoperative procedure model consisted of abdominal surgery procedure, the patient preparation before getting abdominal surgery, and advice on abdominal surgery preparation. (2) the model implementation indicated that the average knowledge and capability score of the nurses in the experimental group were higher than before using the model, and significantly higher than the control group (p 0.00). The nurses were satisfied with the model at a high level (Mean 4.35, SD 0.59). (3) After applying the model, the number of postponed or cancelled operative cases decreased. There were no cardiovascular complications reported.
