The development process consisted of 4 phases: (1) clarifying problem (2) reviewing and developing the CPG for chronic pain management (3) supervising and follow up and (4) evaluating the CPG usage. The sample consisted of 22 professional nurse and 30 chronic pain patient. Research instruments consisted of general information questionnaire, knowledge and satisfaction questionnaire of the nurses including chronic pain assessment and satisfaction questionnaire of the patients. CVI were .9, 1.0, 0.85 and 1.0 respectively. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were .88, .88, .83 and .93 respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and paired t – test.
The results showed that the chronic pain assessment consisted of (1) pain score assessment, (2) ability of doing daily activities, (3) needs of increasing opioids dosage, (4) needs of the physicians’ or nurses’ care, (5) quality of sleep, (6) mood, (7) side effects of opioids. The clinical practice guideline on chronic pain management did improve comprehension and confidence of the nurses in managing chronic pain. Comparison of the nurses’ knowledge before and after CPG development were significantly different at the level of .05. The nurses were satisfied with using the GPG at a high level (Mean 4.15, SD.56). Before using the CPG, 70% of the patients reported their pain level at a high level. After using the CPG, 60% of the patients reported that they experienced mild pain level and were satisfied at the highest level (Mean 4.79, SD .49).
