The Effects of Health Promoting Program on Modification of Diet and Exercise Behavior Among Obese Children, Dansai Crown Prince Hospital

Abstract
Obese children are at risk of chronic diseases, metabolic syndrome and psycho-social impacts. Diet and exercise behavior modification are quite important. The objective of this quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design was to investigate the effects of health promoting program on modification of diet and exercise behavior among obese children, Dansai Crown Prince Hospital. A sample of 26 obese children aged 9-12 years was purposive selected and received the health promoting program. This health promoting program based on the theory of Planned Behavior and consisted of a 4-session activities at the pediatric nutrition clinic and a 3-session telephone follow-up visit Data were collected using personal information, nutritional status, die and exercise behavior, and weight to height criteria questionnaire. The content validity of the questionnaire was 0.93 and reliability was 0.80. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t test.
The results revealed that after participating in the health promoting program, the mean score on diet and exercise behavior of the samples were significantly higher than before joining the program (p < .001). The average weight and the average percentage of weight to height criteria were significantly lower than before joining the program (p < .001) The developed health promoting program is effectively in enabling children with obesity to change their behavior and to lose weight.
