Development of Humanized Care Model for Cancer Patients among Professional Nurses: Research and Development

Abstract
This study aimed to develop humanized care model for cancer patients among professional nurses and to evaluate the efficacy of the model. The research and development study consisted of 4 steps: 1) situational analysis on nursing care of the cancer patients, 2) development the humanized care model of the cancer patients, 3) model implementation, and 4) model evaluation. The sample consisted of 33 professional nurses and 10 cancer patients. Data were collected using individual interview, group discussion, questionnaires and lesson learned. Research instruments were individual interview form, transformative knowledge and skills evaluation form, and the model’s efficacy evaluation form. The construct validity was correlated and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.92. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The result revealed that the humanized care model of the cancer patients among professional nurses consisted of 4 compositions: 1) identified the humanized nursing care characteristics, 2) formulated the policy and management of humanized care, 3) developed humanized care knowledge and skills through transformative learning process and 4) directed and evaluated the implementation of the policy and managements. After implementation of the model, the humanized care knowledge and skills via transformative learning process of the nurses significantly increased at the level of 0.001. The overall average score of the humanized care characteristics was at a high level (Mean 4.25, SD 0.45). The overall average score of the model implementation at the patient unit was at a high level (Mean 4.18, SD 0.43), In addition, the cancer patients were satisfied with humanized nursing care. In conclusion, the humanized care model of the cancer patients among professional nurses was appropriate and applicable to practice.
