Abstract

Encouraging postpartum mothers who lack of confidence to succeed in exclusive breast-feeding for 6 month is quite important. The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the effectiveness of self- efficacy promotion program, perceived outcome expectation on exclusive breast-feeding for 6 months and breast-feeding behaviors.  The perceived self- efficacy promotion program was developed based on self- efficacy theory. The sample was divided into 2 groups, in which each group consisted of 33 normal delivery postpartum mothers. The pre and post-test measures was employed before and after the program intervention. The experimental group participated in 6-session of self-efficacy activities for 6 weeks. Data were collected using 4-part questionnaires: 1) personal information, 2) perceived self-efficacy, 3) perceived outcome expectation, and 4) breast-feeding behaviors. Descriptive data were analyzed using frequencies, percentage; while comparison date were analyzed using Chi square test, Independent t-test, and paired samples t-test.

The results revealed that after 6 weeks of participating in the self-efficacy program, the mean score on self- efficacy,  perceived outcome expectation in exclusive breast-feeding 6 months, and breastfeeding behaviors of the experimental group were significantly higher than before joining the program and significantly higher than the control group (p <.001).  Thus, these findings indicated that self- efficacy promotion program did make the postpartum mothers feel confident in their abilities and achieved outcome expectations on exclusive breast-feeding for 6 months, thereby changed their breast-feeding behaviors.
