Effect of Educational Program of Venous Thromboembolism Assessment and Prevention for Trauma Nurses in Trauma Intensive Care Unit
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed at examining the effect of educational program on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) assessment and prevention among 11 nursing staff in trauma intensive care unit. Participants received the educational program: 1) venous thromboembolism booklet, 2) deep vein thrombosis (DVT) sign and symptoms assessment video, 3) Caprini DVT risk assessment tool translated by the researcher and 4) a DVT prevention nursing guideline. Data were collected using DVT pre-post test, which consisted of 3 modules and 60 questions. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and Wilcoxon signed rank T test.
The findings showed that the average knowledge scores before and after receiving the educational program of the 11 nurse-participants were significant difference (p = .003). The knowledge scores of the nurse-participants after received the educational program were quite high (89.9% correct answer). This study suggested that teaching materials of the educational program should be improved and developed with the focus on providing additional knowledge of topics that having less knowledge score. In addition, continuation of the ICU-nurse educational program on VTE assessment and prevention and further research is needed.
