The development of an integrated counseling model with stakeholder participation in preventing suicidal risk behaviors among adolescents

Abstract

This developmental research aimed to 1) study the problems and factors related to suicidal risk behaviors in adolescents 2) develop of an integrated counseling model with stakeholders to participate in preventing suicidal behavior risks in adolescents 3) evaluate the effectiveness of the counseling model. The research was conducted in 3 stages: Stage 1 To studied the problems and related factors. The sample consisted of 40 students with mild to severe depression and 35 related stakeholders including teachers, friends, family, nurses and public health officers. The research instruments were the Thai version of The Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescent: PHQ-A) and the semi-structured interview form. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Phase 2 Development of the consultation model developed by the researcher. The model passed the content validity check by 3 experts. The item consistency scores for each item were between .67-1.00. Phase 3: Evaluation of the effectiveness of the counseling model. The sample consisted of 20 students with mild to severe depression. They were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group, with 10 students per group. The research instruments were the Adolescent Depression Assessment Form. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed ranks test and the Mann-Whitney U test. The results of the research found that:

1. The problem of suicidal behavior in adolescents is increasing. The related factors include negative life events, rumination, stress and depression.

2. The model has 6 activities, including promoting positive attitudes and participation of those involved, assessing problems and needs, adjusting thoughts and behavior, strengthening self-worth social support and strengthening and sustaining

3. After the experiment, the experimental group's mean depression score was lower than before the experiment, with a statistically significant difference at the .05 level and the mean depression scores of the experimental and control groups after the experiment were not statistically significant difference at the .05

Therefore, this counseling model can help prevent suicide risk behavior in adolescents and use basic information to formulate policies for student care and assistance with the participation of teachers, friends, parents, and public health officials.
