Social capital development for quality of life of older persons

Abstract

This research is a case study qualitative research. To analyze issues related to the use of social capital to promote the quality of life of the elderly in the community and to study the social capital development model to promote the quality of life of the elderly in the community. Between February 2020 and  September 2020, the population in the study  were community leaders who are involved in promoting the quality of life of the elderly in all 4 dimensions, namely health, social, economic and environmental; social capital that was an individual, a group of people such as the school board of the elders, elderly caregiver, center for enhancement of agricultural production and local government organizations. The sample was selected into a specific group of 60 people. The research tools were interview questions and group discussions with community leaders who were involved in promoting the quality of life of the elderly in all 4 dimensions as follows: questionnaire on community participation in promoting the quality of life of the elderly and questionnaire on the guidelines for developing  a social capital model for promoting the quality of life of the elderly, analyze data using content analysis

The results of the research revealed that the issues related to the use of social capital to promote the quality of life of the elderly in the community consisted of 5 issues: leadership, motivation, team building, increasing the capacity of the leaders of various groups in organizing social, economic, health, and environmental activities contributing to the quality of life of the elderly and coordination of network partners and the social capital development model for promoting the quality of life of the elderly in the community consisted  of 6 components and were divided into 3 phases, namely the first phase, the extension phase, and the sustainability phase. In this study, all components of 2 phases were performed, in  phase  3 it was in the process of promoting the development of community potential and developing learning resources to support the quality of life of the elderly continuously and sustainably.

Recommendations : community leaders should promote the full implementation of the social capital development process in phase 3 to promote continuity and sustainability of the quality of life of the elderly in the community
