Factors Affecting the Health Literacy of Older Adults with Hypertension in Nong Prue Community, Samut Prakan Province

The purposes of this study were to examine health literacy of older adults with
hypertension, and to explore predicting factors of health literacy of older adults with hypertension in Nong Prue Community, Samut Prakan Province. Two hundred and eighteen participants were recruited by using a purposive random sampling technique. Data collection was performed by using questionnaires regarding demographic data, social support, perceived severity of hypertension, and health literacy of older adults with hypertension. The reliability of the social support, perceived severity of hypertension, and health literacy of older adults with hypertension were 0.76, 0.86 and 0.96, respectively. Descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression were employed for data analyses.
The results reveal that 44.5% of older adults with hypertension were at moderate level of health literacy. The health literacy was at low level (Mean = 1.15, S.D. = 0.60), social support and perceived severity were at moderate level (Mean =1.81, S.D.= 0.61, Mean =2.24, S.D.= 0.45, respectively). Perceived severity of older adults with hypertension and social support in the evaluation part could predict of health literacy of older adults with hypertension for 32.1 % (p <.001)
In conclusion, these results could be employed as information for health literacy promoting plan in order to increase good healthy literacy and have behavior sustainable health.
