Abstract

The objective of this quasi-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design was to study the effects of using the ISBAR Model for handing over patients between emergency room and in-patient units on shift report quality as perceived by in-charge nurses at the Central Chest Institute of Thailand. The sample included twenty in-charge nurses who had worked more than 1 year at the position, comprising twelve from the emergency room and eight from cardiology wards. The research instruments, developed by the researche, were:  ISBAR Model for handover program which consisted of 1) A workshop to teach about shift report using the ISBAR Model; 2) A manual for handover of patients by using the ISBAR Model; and 3) A group for all participants in the Line application. The quality assessment form on using the ISBAR Model as perceived by nurses. It consists of 4 parts:1) Personal information
(7 items); 2) The accuracy and completeness of the information submitted (25 items); 3) Ability to use information for continuing nursing (3 items); and 4) Problems, obstacles, and recommendations, which were open-ended questions. Content validity of all instruments was verified by 3 experts. The content validity was 0.99. Cronbach alpha reliability score was 0.83. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon test statistics.

The results found that after using the ISBAR Model, the overall score and each part of shift reports quality for handover of patients from the emergency room to cardiology wards as perceived by in-charge nurses were significantly higher than those before using the ISBAR Model (P<0.05). ISBAR

In conclusion, Model improves the quality of handover the patients between emergency room nurses and wards.
