The Effects of Breast Self-Examination Acquisition Program on Knowledge, Attitude and Breast Self–Examination Skill Among Nursing Students

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. And prone to disease in younger women is increasing. Breast self-examination (BSC) is a screening method and the importance of early detection of breast cancer.This Quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of breast self-examination acquisition program on knowledge, attitude and breast self–examination skill among nursing students, using the concept of participatory learning in organizing the activities. In this study, 87 nursing students in second year of Borommarajonnani college of Nursing, Ratchaburi were recruited by purposive sampling selection. The sampling participated in 4 weeks of breast self-examination acquisition program. The tools used in collecting data were questionnaires, an observation of breast self-examination and evaluation of breast examination skills. Their reliabilities were 0.45, 0.79 and 0.47 in respectively. The data were collected twice, once before the experiment and after the experiment. The data were analyzed by percentage, means, standard deviations and Paired t-test.
The result found that after experiment. The Sampling scored higher in knowledge, attitude and breast self–examination skill compared to before the experiment (Mean =9.61, 12.67 Mean =4.23, 4.53 และ Mean =8.74, 12.48 respectively) at statistical significance level .001
Concussion: the breast self-examination acquisition program should be encouraged for implementation among nursing students. This program could be applied as a guild line for health promoting personnel and training of village health volunteers and increase the accuracy practice of breast self-examination for breast cancer screening.
