Predicting Factors of Social Intelligence among Nursing Students
Predicting Factors of Social Intelligence among Nursing Students
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Social intelligence is an important foundation to build relationships with others.
Nursing students with high social intelligence are more likely to build a good relationship
with others and also provide the best health care services to their clients. Moreover, they
can work with multidisciplinary teams effectively. This predictive correlational study aimed
to investigate the social intelligence and its predicting factors among nursing students.
The participants were 450 nursing students in the Eastern part of Thailand selected by
using proportional stratifed random sampling. Data was collected using self-reported
measures of personal information, Social intelligence, Emotional intelligence, Learning
styles, Nursing adaptation, Online chatting addiction behaviors, and Family relationships.
The questionnaires no. 2-7 yielded Cronbach’s Alpha of .83, .90, .89, .85, .92, and .84
respectively. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coeffcient, and
stepwise multiple regression analysis were employed for data analyses.
The study fndings revealed that nursing students have high levels of social intelligence
with a mean score of 106.08 (SD.= 9.04). Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated
that emotional intelligence, nursing adaptation, and family relationships together could
explain 52.40% of the variance in social intelligence of these nursing students (R2=.524,
F=163.796, p<.001). The most signifcant predicting factor was emotional intelligence
(β=.597, p<.01) followed by nursing adaptation (β=.145, p<.001) and family relationships
(β=.100; p<.001).
Results from this study generated important baseline data which can be used to
design the learning activities or extracurricular activities or program to increase nursing
students’ social intelligence by enhancing emotional intelligence, adaptation skills, and
family relationships.
