ABSTRACTDiabetic foot ulcers are major complications leading to foot amputation in diabetic
patients. This impact on patients both physically and mentally. Reduce quality of life
and increase family care burden. The purpose of this research was to develop and to
study the effect of community-based strengthening model for promoting foot care
behaviors among diabetic persons with peripheral neuropathy at Thambon Sunpuloei,
Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province. Using the research and development process, it
consists of 2 phases. Phase I, to development of community based strengthening model
for promoting foot care behaviors among diabetic persons with peripheral neuropathy.
This phase consists of a situational analysis, a pattern development, and a format
experiment. Data were collected from the questionnaire, group discussion and in-depth
interviews and were conducted for 4 months. Forty diabetic patients were select on a
specifc basic from diabetic patients, caregivers and families representative of local/
community organization, health personnel and public health volunteers. Data were
analyzed by in-depth interviews and group discussion by content analysis. Phase 2, to
investigate a community based strengthening model for promoting foot care behaviors
among diabetic persons with peripheral neuropathy. The samples were 60 diabetic
patients, selected on a specifc basic. The samples were divided into the control group
and the experimental group, 30 persons each group. The experimental group received
food care according to the developed model. The control group received regular foot
care. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.
The study results showed that phase 1 had a community-based strengthening
model for promoting foot care behaviors among diabetic persons with peripheral
neuropathy, consisted of four activities: 1) screening for risk of diabetic foot ulcers and
knowledge of foot care behaviors among diabetic persons with peripheral neuropathy
2) promoting self-care of foot behavior 3) family involvement, and 4) participation of
partners in the community. Phase 2, the results showed that the experimental group was
statistically signifcant higher daily foot care score than before the experiment and
higher than the control group (p<.05).
Therefore, the results of this study can be development of promoting foot care
behaviors among diabetic persons with peripheral neuropathy based on families and
communities as a guideline and a strategy are essential to local administration, community
leader and health personnel in order to increase foot care behaviors among diabetic
persons with peripheral neuropathy’s quality of life and independent living.
