ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to indicate the roles of nurses and families to promote
breastfeeding in adolescent mothers. Breast milk is useful as well as the best source of
nutrients for babies. It helps the babies to develop and grow well. However, In Thailand,
the exclusive breastfeeding rates for at least 6 months were minimal and lower than the
50% target, especially only 17% of adolescent mothers gave breastfeeding through
6 months. This is the high risk group for breastfeeding because of not having enough
motherly maturity, lacking physical and mind readiness, being self-centered, lacking
experience and security in breastfeeding. All these caused stress, anxiety, and fear.
The causes influencing breastfeeding of adolescent mothers were related to adolescent
mothers in particular, and others like new born babies, families and health team staff.
From reviewing of literature, we found that breastfeeding promotion in adolescent
mothers could be succeed and useful for both mothers and babies, there should be a
continuity of promotion by health team and families. In this article, the roles of nurses
and families were to facilitate breastfeeding among adolescent mothers by using
the integrated House’s and Gibson’s concept of four steps: discovering reality, critical
reflection, taking appropriate charge and maintaining effective practice through emotional,
appraisal, informational, and instrumental supports.
