ABSTRACT
This study was a quasi-experimental research with a one group pretest and post
test design. The study aimed to compare communication competency of nursing students before and after participating in an instructional model of Nursing informatics and communication in nursing subject. The sample consisted of eighty six first year nursing students. The instrument used in the study was Communication competency measurement scale. The Alpha Cronbach reliability of the instrument was 0.78.The model of teaching in the subject was developed based on Spencer & Spencer ’s Competence Model (1993), consisting of activities designed to enhance communication skills for nursing students such as: lecture, discuss, brainstorm, analyze and reflective thinking. The intervention included seven sessions, each of which 3 hours. The model was validated by three experts. Data were analyzed by using t-test Independent.
The findings revealed that the mean score of communication competency of the subjects after experiment (mean = 3.60) was statistically significant higher than that of before (mean = 3.47, p <.05).
The findings of the study recommend that Instructional model of Communication subject should include activities covering the five competencies: motivation, trait, self-concept, knowledge and skills competency to enhance communication competency for nursing students. Communication competency on 4th nursing students should be further studied.
