Factors Influencing Blood Glucose Control among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Keywords:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Glycemic Control, Fasting Blood Sugar, Sleep QualityAbstract
This cross-sectional study examined factors associated with glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending the diabetes clinic at Mae Suai Hospital, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The sample comprised 388 volunteers with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were recruited using volunteer sampling. Data were collected using five instruments: a personal information questionnaire, a health literacy questionnaire, a self-management behavior questionnaire, a sleep quality questionnaire, and a social support questionnaire. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and univariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis.
Univariable binary logistic regression analysis showed that fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels and sleep quality were significantly associated with glycemic control. Variables with
p-values < .25 were age, ethnicity, marital status, occupation, smoking status, duration of diabetes, FBS, and sleep quality, and were entered into the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Results indicated that patients with FBS levels between 131–160 mg/dL were 2.43 times more likely to have poor blood glucose control compared to those with normal FBS levels. Patients with FBS levels above 160 mg/dL were 11.40 times more likely to have poor control. In addition, patients with poor sleep quality were 2.87 times more likely to have uncontrolled hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) compared to those with good sleep quality.
In conclusion, FBS levels and sleep quality were significant predictors of blood glucose control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. These findings provide preliminary evidence to inform nursing care planning, patient care program development, and targeted strategies to improve blood glucose levels and quality of life in this patient population.
