Factors Related to Herbal Usage Behaviors of Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Primary Care Units, Samut Songkhram Province

This cross-sectional research aimed to study the factors related to herbal usage behaviors of Type 2 diabetic patients in primary care units, Samut Songkhram province. Participants were 360 patients selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected by herbal usage behaviors questionnaire with its Cronbach's alpha coefficient = .75, and analyzed by descriptive statistics in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and also Chi-Square test. The results revealed that:
- There were 35% of the participants using herbal medicine.
- Significant factors relating to herbal usage behaviors of Type 2 diabetic patients were receiving information linked to herbal medicine for curing diabetes and receiving training about herbal medicine (P ≤ 0.05), while factors relating to genders, age, marital status, education levels, occupation, duration of illness and congenital disease were not significant.
The study could be suggested that learning resources about herbal medicine for diabetes, experts in herbal medicine such as folk healers and community herbal medicine clubs should be promoted for delivering knowledge to diabetic patients in community and also supporting and conserving local wisdom linked to herbal medicine for health.
