Abstract

This quasi experimental research, one group pretest-posttest design, aimed to examine the effectiveness of nutrition care process on levels of malnutrition and performance status among adult patients admitted to Maesot hospital. Samples were 87 patients, purposively recruited from those who were admitted to adult patient department, Maesot hospital between January and September, 2020. Research instruments consisted of nutrition care process, SPENT nutrition screening tool, nutrition triage, and performance status assessment form (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group [ECOG]). Data were analyzed using Paired t – test and Wilcoxon signed rank test.

The results showed that most participants were male (54.02%), had the average age 53 years, and had the average body mass index 31.23. After using the nutrition care process, the malnutrition score (M = 8.10, SD = 2.62) and the ECOG score (M = 1.64, SD = 0.70) were significantly lower than that of before (M = 6.23, SD = 2.42; M = 0.72, SD = 0.69) (p=.001).

Therefore, Maesot hospital should adopt the nutrition care process to be employed in the adult wards and extended to community hospitals for reducing referral rate of patients with severe malnutrition to main network hospitals.
