Abstract

This Quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of health education program applied health belief model and social support on behavioral change to prevent Opisthorchiasis and Cholangiocarcinoma of people aged 40 years and over in Muangmai Sub-district, Sriboonruang District, Nongbua Lamphu Province. The samples were 76 people randomly selected by systematic random sampling from 3,738 risk people and then the samples were divided into the experimental group and the control group, 38 persons in each group. The experimental group received the health education program, including lectures, health education media, demonstrations, practice, group discussions, learning exchanges, handbooks, brochures, social support for advice and also home visits for a total of 24 weeks. Data were collected before and after the experiment. The data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics to compare mean differences by Paired t-test and Independent t-test.

The results showed that after the experiment, the experimental group had knowledge, perceived risk of the diseases, perceived severity of the disease, benefits and obstacles to prevent the diseases, and proper behaviors to prevent the diseases higher than before the experiment significantly (p-value<0.01).

This research model can be applied for preventing helminthiasis or other diseases that can be prevented by creating good health behaviors such as building networking as “Friends help me to be together for preventing eating raw fish” in order to reduce and stop eating raw food in Thai society.
