Oral health literacy and experience in dental treatments of grade 4-6 students in Suphanburi

Abstract

             The purposes of this research were to study oral health literacy and to compare oral health literacy between two groups, including students with and without experiences in dental treatments of grade 4-6 primary school students at Suphanburi province.  Population of this study was 9,043 grade 4-6 primary school students at Suphanburi province. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 385 students via a multi-stage of a randomly selected sample. Data were collected from the oral health literacy questionnaire for primary school students, which its reliability was 0.94, and then analyzed using an independent t-test.

               1. The findings showed that accessibility, understanding, evaluation, and usage of oral health literacy were at moderate levels. Communication with dental professionals and supports from society were at high levels. By comparison, the mean of the oral health literacy score of students experienced in dental treatments was higher than those without experienced in dental treatments (M=2.74, SD=0.42 and M=2.68, SD=0.45 respectively).

               2.  The students experienced in dental treatments also showed statistically significant in the mean score of the accessibility of oral health literacy and communication with dental professionals higher than those without experienced in dental treatments (p<0.05).

           For improving the oral health literacy of students, the dental health promotion should be developed and added into general education courses of primary schools.
