The Development of a Teaching Model to Enhance Home Visit Skills for Bedridden Patients among Third-Year Dental Public Health Students at Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Yala

Caring for bedridden patients in the community is a crucial mission of the primary health care system, particularly for public health and dental public health personnel who are required to possess comprehensive home visit skills. This study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a teaching model to enhance home visit skills for bedridden patients—in terms of knowledge, home visit skills, and caregiver satisfaction—among third-year students in the Bachelor of Public Health Program, Dental Public Health major, at Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Yala.
This study employed a research and development design. The sample comprised 30 third-year Dental Public Health students who enrolled in the Oral Health Promotion in the Elderly course during the second semester of the 2025 academic year. The research instruments included a pretest–posttest knowledge test, a home visit skills assessment form, a caregiver satisfaction assessment regarding students' home visits, and focus group discussion guidelines. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The results revealed that students who learned through the developed teaching model demonstrated significantly higher posttest knowledge and home visit skills scores compared with pretest scores. The level of caregiver satisfaction with students’ home visits was rated at a very high level. Findings from the focus group discussions indicated that students gained greater confidence in conducting home visits, developed a clearer understanding of their professional roles, and were able to apply their knowledge effectively in real-world practice.
The developed teaching model can be applied to teaching and learning activities related to community-based patient care and has the potential to be expanded to other public health curricula.
