Abstract

This quasi-experimental study was conducted with a two-group pre-posted-test design and aimed to investigate the effects of communication skills for relationship programs on the quality of life for family caregivers of older people with dementia. The inclusion criteria were the family caregivers aged 18 years and over, provided care for older people with early-stage dementia, had experience in dementia caregiving for less than 5 years, and understood Thai language. The exclusion criteria were for those who had a communicable or uncontrolled noncommunicable diseases. A total number of participants was 52 family caregivers that were determined by power analysis. The participants were randomly allocated into the experiment and the control group, 26 persons in each group. A total period of the program was six weeks. The data were collected through the following questionnaires, the Thai version of WHOQOL-BREF, the Communication Skills, the Relationship, and the Coping Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a t-test. The results showed that after receiving the program, family caregivers' quality of life in the experiment group (x̄=97.19, SD=11.48) was significantly higher than before receiving the program (x̄=88.23, SD=11.99) and higher than in the control group (x̄=90.65, SD=13.54) at a p-value < .05. The findings can be the basis for determining the activities to enhance the quality of life for family caregivers of older people with dementia.
