Factors Associated with Caregiver Roles for Chronically Ill Elders in Muang District, Ubonratchathani Province

The objective of this study was to investigate the caregiver roles and study factors associated with caregiver roles for chronically ill elders in muang district, Ubonratchathani province. Participants were 157 people who are the primary caregivers, who were 18 years old and above, such as off-springs and relatives of the elderly in the family. They were selected by random sampling method. Data were collected by questionnaire and were analyzed by Chi-square test and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. The results showed that the elderly carers with chronic illnesses had caregiver roles in a moderate level. When considering each aspect, it was found that the roles of a caregiver in physical, mental, social and economic care were moderate level. Statistically significant factors that were positively associated with caregiver roles for chronically ill elders are predisposing factor: caregiver’s occupation, age of caregiver, enabling factors: sufficiency of obtaining health information, distance of access to health services, costs of access to health service and reinforcing factors: social support. Statistically significant factors that was negatively associated with caregiver roles for chronically ill elders is a number of elderly people in care.
