The Effect of Herbal Poultices for Relieving Knee Pain among Older Adults with Osteoarthritis

Abstract

            This quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal knee poultices in reducing knee pain among older adults with osteoarthritis, and to assess the participants' satisfaction with the intervention. Data collection took place between October and December 2024.
            The sample included 68 elderly participants aged 60 years and older, evenly divided into an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 34 members. The experimental group received herbal knee poultices along with a self-care manual tailored for osteoarthritis management while the control group received standard care provided by healthcare facility. Participants were chosen using a simple random sampling method. Data collection utilized several instruments: (1) a questionnaire to gather general demographic information about the participants; (2) an assessment tool for evaluating the severity of osteoarthritis; (3) a self-assessment survey for pain levels; and (4) a satisfaction survey regarding the herbal knee poultices. Data analysis was conducted as follows: (1) Descriptive statistics calculated the mean and standard deviation of baseline values; (2) Paired t-tests compared pain level scores within each group; and (3) Independent t-tests compared pain level scores between the two groups.
            After a four-week intervention using herbal knee poultices, results indicated no significant difference in mean pain scores between the experimental and control group prior to the trial. However, post-intervention analysis identified a statistically significant difference in mean pain scores between the two groups (t = 2.39, p = 0.01). Additionally, the satisfaction assessment across all five areas indicated consistently high to very high levels of satisfaction.
