Abstract
The descriptive study aimed to identify and investigate the health promoting and
hypertension-preventive behaviors in aspects of consumption, physical activity, stress
management, screening. It also sought to test the correlation between predisposing,
enabling, reinforcing factors and health promoting and hypertension-preventive
behaviors of people in a selected community in Bukkhalo, Thonburi, Bangkok. The subjects
were 161 people whose age ranged from 35 and above who were recruited by systematic
sampling. The research instruments were questionnaires including knowledge of
hypertension, health promoting and hypertension-preventive behaviors, which were tested
in terms of content validity by three experts, and with regard to its reliability by computing
Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient; the scores were 0.60 and 0.75 respectively. Statistics used
to analyze data were descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient
and Chi-Square test. The findings were as follows. Overall and in most specific aspects, the
subjects had health promoting and hypertension-preventive behaviors at a good level except
in the aspect of physical activity that fell into a fair level. There was a moderate correlation
between having underlying illnesses and health promoting and hypertension-preventive
behaviors with the statistical significance at .05 The correlation between education level,
age, getting information from various media and health promoting and hypertensionpreventive
behaviors were at a low level with the statistical significance at .05
