Abstract

This descriptive research was aimed at studying health status and health protective
behaviors among fishermen in Samutsakorn province. The subjects were 209 fishermen
residing in Bang Yah Praek District and Tha Cheen District. Interviewing was used as the
research tool which was evaluated on content validity, and the tool’s reliability was measured
by means of Cronbach’s Alpha which was at 0.70-0.85. The data was analyzed by
descriptive statistics, and the results were: 1) The majority of the subjects were male
(97.61%). The career duration ranged from 1 to 5 years (38.27%). The subjects were lack of
information relating to security in career and diving (56.94% and 59.81% respectively). 2) In
terms of health status, 71.29 percent of the study samples perceived their general health
status at moderate level. Individual aspects of health status, including physical and mental
aspects, were also found to be at a moderate level (72.25% and 72.73% respectively).
3) Health protective behaviors of the subjects were at a moderate level (69.38%). Individual
aspects of health protective behaviors, including general health protective and work-related
protective behaviors, were also found to be at a moderate level (76.56% and 67.94%). The
results of this study suggest that the relevant health personnel should recognize the significance
of occupational health and safety service among fishermen systematically and
continuously. This will result in a higher level of safety, reduce occupational risk and wellbeing
among these fishermen.
