Abstract

The purposes of this study were to compare knowledge and anxiety of caregivers of
elderly patients with heart failure before and after receiving discharge planning program
prior move from Medication Intensive Care Unit, Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital. Thirty
caregivers of elderly patients with heart failure were recruited by using purposive sampling
technique. The experiment instruments was discharge planning program and handout for caregivers
was validated by five experts. The instrument used for data collection were the
demographic data, knowledge and anxiety questionnaires which validated by experts and the
reliability determined by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.86, 0.85, Data were analyzed
using paired-sampled t-test.
The results were as follows: 1) The knowledge scores of caregivers of elderly
patients with heart failure before receiving discharge planning program were at good level
( = 10.10, SD = 2.77) 2) The anxiety scores of caregivers of elderly patients with heart
failure before receiving discharge planning program were at high level ( = 6.83, SD = 2.56)
3) The knowledge scores of caregivers of elderly patients with heart failure after receiving
discharge planning program were at good level ( = 12.63, SD = 1.54) 4) The anxiety
scores of caregivers of elderly patients with heart failure after receiving discharge planning
program were decreased to poor level ( = 3.50, SD = 2.37) 5) After experimentation the
knowledge scores of caregivers of elderly patients with heart failure were significantly
higher than before experimentation at p<.01. 6) After experimentation the anxiety scores of
caregivers of elderly patients with heart failure were significantly lower than before experimentation
at p<.01.
