Nursing care in patients with PD-related peritonitis patient: Role of PD nurse

PD-related peritonitis is a significant problem in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Peritonitis is a major cause of technical failure in PD patients, leading to PD catheter removal and hemodialysis transfer. Moreover, peritonitis affects the physical and mental condition of both PD patient and caregiver. The PD nurses play important role in caring for PD-related peritonitis patients, which includes 1.) The role of nursing care consisting of taking the record of symptoms and signs that recently appeared in patients that signify peritonitis, finding the cause, collecting PD fluid for examination, and administering antibiotics to complete the treatment plan. 2.) The role of counseling about any problems in order to help them to get to know themselves, understand themselves, and know how to adjust and believe in themselves and their ability to plan and solve various problems that may arise and may be a barrier for PD. Therefore, PD nurses play a major role in counseling and preliminary solutions. 3.) The role relating to peritonitis prevention, particularly the teaching of PD patients about caution in practice that may increase the risk of peritonitis. Teaching method should be problem-based with demonstration and the learners should practice PD after every period of 6 months. 4.) The role of coordinating; PD nurses are the coordinators who connect multidisciplinary teams to provide a plan for optimal treatment and care for patients with peritonitis.
