Incidence of Postoperative Bleeding After Dental Extraction in Patients Receiving Antithrombotic Drugs.

Abstract

         The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence of postoperative bleeding after dental extraction in patients receiving antithrombotic drugs (antiplatelet drug and/or anticoagulant drug; warfarin). Dental extraction was performed while the patients continued taking oral antithrombotic drugs. We collected clinical data of patients in whom dental extractions were performed at Dental Division, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University from chart records retrospectively between August 2011 and February 2013. The total of 412 patients, 243 patients were men and 169 patients were women. Their ages ranged from 25 to 98 years. Among the 412 antithrombotic patients, 330 received antiplatelet monotherapy, 59 received warfarin monotherapy, and 23 received antiplatelet and warfarin combination therapy. The total of 648 teeth had been extracted. The result of this study showed that incidence of postoperative bleeding after dental extraction in patients receiving antithrombotic drugs occurred in 11 patients (2.7%). Postoperative bleeding in warfarin patients were significantly higher than antiplatelet patients. All of 11 patients were treated by local hemostatic measures.
