A Study on the Problems, Obstacles and Solution in the Development of Mahidol-IR database in 2011 – 2015

This study was carried out with the aims to: 1) examine problems and obstacles in the process of Mahidol-IR database development; and 2) find out solutions to overcome the problems and obstacles in the development of the database.
Data revealed from the perspectives of organization administration, practitioners, and database administrators suggest that problems and obstacles found in the process of Mahidol-IR database development were: 1. a lack of formal document from the University to indicate the development of Mahidol-IR database as part of its policy; 2. an inadequate personnel assigned to take a responsibility for importing the data; 3. a lack of personnel with expertise in DSpace program; 4. an inadequate knowledge of personnel leading to the need of trainings/seminars both locally and abroad; 5. a need to update knowledge on the import of data into the database; 6. a lack of continuity and consistency of the work leading to inadequate experience of personnel to do the work efficiently; and 7. time consumption of routine workload taking up time for the database development.
Regarding solutions to the problems and obstacles, data indicate that to improve the process of Mahidol-IR database development there must be procedures to: 1 push forward the university administration to formally specify the development of Mahidol-IR database as a part of its policy; 2. recruit more personnel to specifically take a responsibility to develop the database; 3. organize relevant in-house trainings/seminars, and offer opportunities for responsible staff to attend trainings/seminars held both locally and abroad; 4. make it clear to the staff responsible for data import to hold the job as part of the performance agreement (PA) and of performance evaluation; 5 and prepare an operating manual with metadata standard to ensure a common understanding of users, which could facilitate and save time to import data.
