Abstract

Purposes: To study effects of pre-operative preparation information program on anxietyand satisfaction among open fracture patients undergoing orthopedic surgery at Phon Thong hospital.

Study design: Quasi – experimental research.

Material and Methods: The sample comprised patients with open fractures aged between 15 and 65 years, who were diagnosed by orthopedic specialists and underwent surgical interventions. In cases where patients with Gustilo type III fractures experienced severe pain and had an altered level of consciousness rendering them unready to provide information, data collection /intervention was deferred until their pain subsided to a score of less than 5. The participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 36 individuals in each group. The experimental instrument utilized was a preoperative information and preparation program. Data collection instruments included an anxiety questionnaire and a satisfaction questionnaire. Statistical Analysis Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the paired-sample t-test. (p<.05)

Main finding: The comparison of anxiety levels between open fracture patients who received the preoperative preparation program and those who received routine care revealed a statistically significant difference post-intervention (p<.05). The experimental group demonstrated a lower mean anxiety score of 1.60 (SD. = 0.44), whereas the control group presented a higher mean anxiety score of 3.82 (SD. = 0.58), yielding a mean difference of 2.22 (95% CI: -2.47 to -1.98). Regarding patient satisfaction, a statistically significant difference was also observed between the two groups (p < .05). The experimental group reported a higher mean satisfaction score of 4.76 (SD. = 0.33) compared to 2.52 (SD. = 0.70) in the control group, with a mean difference of 2.23 (95%CI: 1.98 to 2.50).

Conclusion and recommendations: The preoperative preparation program effectively reduced patient anxiety and yielded a high level of satisfaction, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the surgical intervention.
