The Effectiveness of Clean Intermittent Self-Catheterization Education on Knowledge and Skills in Patients with Neurogenic Bladder Admitted to Roi Et Hospital
Keywords:
Clean intermittent self-catheterization, Neurogenic Bladder, Nursing practiceAbstract
Purposes : To compare the knowledge and skills of patients with neurogenic bladder regarding Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) before and after receiving instruction.
Study design : This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a one-group pretest-posttest design.
Materials and Methods : A purposive sample of 10 patients with neurogenic bladder who had never received prior instruction on CIC was selected. The participants were attending the Rehabilitation Medicine Outpatient Clinic at Roi Et Hospital between July 2025 to December 2025. The research instruments included a CIC instruction manual, lesson plans, and instructional media such as anatomical models and videos. Data collection tools consisted of a knowledge assessment form and a CIC skill assessment form. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Main findings : Prior to the intervention, the participants had low levels of knowledge and skills regarding CIC, with mean scores of 0.30 and 15.00, respectively. After the intervention, knowledge and skills significantly improved, with mean scores increasing to 12.00 and 45.00, respectively. The post-instruction knowledge and skill scores were significantly higher than the pre-instruction scores (p < .05).
Conclusion and Recommendations: Nurse-led instruction on Clean Intermittent Catheterization is effective in enhancing the knowledge and skills of patients with neurogenic bladder and can be effectively applied in clinical practice.
