Effects of a Proactive Health Education Program on Knowledge, Self-Care Behaviors, and Satisfaction among Patients with Tuberculosis

Abstract

Purposes: To examine the effects of an Proactive Health Education Program on tuberculosis knowledge, self-care behaviors, and patient satisfaction among patients with tuberculosis in Si Thep District, Phetchabun Province.

Study design: This study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design.

Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 30 newly registered pulmonary tuberculosis patients receiving treatment at the Tuberculosis Clinic, Si Thep Hospital. Participants were recruited using consecutive sampling. The active health education program was developed based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). Four research instruments were used: (1) a demographic questionnaire, (2) a tuberculosis knowledge and self-care test, (3) a self-care behavior questionnaire, and (4) a patient satisfaction questionnaire. All instruments were validated for content validity by three experts. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the paired t-test, with the significance level set at .05.

Main findings: After participating in the program, participants demonstrated significantly higher mean scores for tuberculosis knowledge and self-care, increasing from 8.40 ± 1.73 to 13.93 ± 1.07 (t = 16.84, p < .001). Self-care behavior scores also increased significantly from 40.87 ± 4.35 to 54.13 ± 3.02 (t = 15.93, p < .001). Overall satisfaction with the program and healthcare services was at the highest level (Mean = 4.78, SD. = 0.32).

Conclusion and Recommendations: The active health education program developed based on the Health Belief Model significantly improved tuberculosis knowledge, self-care behaviors, and patient satisfaction. This program may be adopted by primary and secondary healthcare facilities to strengthen tuberculosis care and improve treatment outcomes at the district level.
