Nursing Care for Breast Cancer Patients Who Have Undergone Mastectomy and Received Chemotherapy: A Case Study

Abstract

Purposes : To analyze and study patient assessment guidelines, find risk problems, as well as nursing planning to prevent complications that occur in breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy and received chemotherapy.

Study design : Case study.

Material and Methods : The study was conducted as a case study. Select breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy and received chemotherapy at the surgical outpatient department, Pathum Thani Hospital between January - October 2025, study from practice and from medical records.

Main finding : Case study: A 60-year-old female was referred from a community hospital after a lump was found in her left breast for one month. The patient underwent mammogram and biopsy. The doctor diagnosed her with BIRADS-5 breast cancer. From the assessment of the health status, the researcher therefore analyzed the data by using nursing process concepts to determine nursing decisions before, during, and after surgery. And nursing care before, during, and after receiving chemotherapy. Covers the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects, emphasizing the provision of information to patients and relatives. Emphasis is placed on communication with the multidisciplinary team caring for the patient under knowledge and experience from past operations. It was found that the patient and relatives participated in decision-making regarding their treatment plan, completed the full course of 8 rounds of chemotherapy, and experienced no complications, and showed no metastasis to other organs, the disease was under control.

Conclusion and recommendation : This case study can be used as a guideline for providing nursing care to breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy and received chemotherapy.
