Effect of Individual Education Program on Child Care Behaviors Perceived by Mothers of Children Aged under 5 Years with Pneumonia in Pho Chai Hospital

Abstract

Purposes : To compare child care behaviors perceived by mothers of children aged under 5 Years with pneumonia in Pho Chai Hospital.

Study design : Quasi-experimental research; two groups, pre-posttest design.

Materials and Methods : All total 50 of mothers sample were consisted of children with pneumonia under 5 years of age admitted to children's ward of Pho Chai Hospital who met the inclusion criteria, divided into 25 of subjects into experimental group and 25 of subjects into  control group.  Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics (Independent t-test).

Main findings : After the experiment, we were found that mothers in experimental group had a higher mean score of overall perception of their ability to care for children with pneumonia than those of control group (p<.001), with mean score of their perception of their ability being 2.02 higher (95%CI : 1.75, 2.29); As for the behavior of caring for children under 5 years of age, after experiment we were found that mothers in experimental group had a higher mean score of care while sick than in control group (p<.001), with an overall mean score of care while sick more than 1.50 (95%CI: 1.14, 1.87) and mean score of care to prevent re-illness were overall higher than control group (p<.001), with mean score of care to prevent re-illness overall 2.29 (95%CI: 2.08 , 2.49)

Conclusion and recommendations : The results of this research that:  mothers having increased awareness of their ability and behavior in caring for children with pneumonia. Therefore, it was used of this intervention in unit should be promoted.
